A typical 30′ x 96′ greenhouse has about 36,000 cubic feet of air. A typical 250,000 BTU unit heater exhausts @ 3,600 cubic feet of air per hour. For every hour the heater runs, there is a 10% air exchange or 10% of the heated air is exhausted. Expensive and wasteful!

CAS stops the inherent air exchange. By bringing the air needed for combustion in from the outside through the CAS venting. Which means you are heating only the re-circulated greenhouse air. Increasing efficiency by 5% – 7%. Allowing cooler, drier, cleaner air to be used in the combustion process, which will extend the life of the Lennox unit heater.

Univent – Automatic Solar Vent Opener Automatically opens hinged vents with an expandable wax that drives a sealed piston. You can adjust the standard cylinder to start opening at any temperature between 60-77° F (15-25° C). An Aluminum spring pulls the vent shut as the greenhouse cools and the wax contracts. Greenhouse Whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum -
The life cycle and number of eggs laid by the greenhouse whitefly (GHWF) varies with the temperature and the species of the host plant.

Eggplant is one of the most favorite vegetable plants of the GHWF. The GHWF will lay nearly 4 times as many eggs on an eggplant as it will on a cucumber plant. It will lay several times more eggs on a cucumber plant than on a tomato plant. The GHWF will usually avoid sweet pepper plants.

Developmental time (egg to adult) for the GHWF can take from 123 days at 54° F. to only 18 days at 86° F. GHWF eggs hatch and go through several instars (stages of larval growth) while attached to the undersides of leaves. Shortly after hatching, the GHWF larvae attaches into the leaf tissue and begins feeding on plant fluids. It remains attached until it emerges as an adult. While attached, the larvae is covered with a protective skeleton that makes it difficult to kill with insecticides. Adults can begin laying 4-10 eggs per day within 1-2 days after emergence. As the various stages of the GHWF feeds on the plant, it excretes large amounts of honeydew. A black sooty mold can grow on the honeydew that can interfere with leaf photosynthesis and transpiration.

Silverleaf Whitefly Bemisia tabaci -
The life cycle and number of eggs laid by the silverleaf whitefly (SLWF) varies with the temperature and the species of the host plant. Bemisia tabaci was reported in Florida as long ago as 1894, but only in the past few years has it become a major pest in the United States. It is a serious pest of many economically important field and greenhouse crops. Often the worst damage results from honeydew (a sweet secretion) that both nymphs and adults drop onto the upper surfaces of leaves. Honeydew supports the growth of sooty mold that damages plants by screening out sunlight. In some areas, SLWF causes great indirect damage by transmitting plant virus. Sometimes SLWF may become so abundant that direct feeding damage kills the crops even before sooty mold and viruses can develop. SLWF is known to attack more than 500 species of plants, many of them economically important. The list includes cabbage, cotton, melons, poinsettia, squash, tomato, and many other ornamental and vegetable crops. Nationwide, dollar losses have exceeded $200 million annually. Entomologists believe that the recent economic losses are being caused by a new strain of SLWF (biotype B), or perhaps even a new species -Bemisia argentifolii. Since this new whitefly is much more resistant to insecticides than the old SLWF, biological control is a desirable alternative. all information on SLWF is from the USDA in Mission TX.

Thrips are very tiny insects (about 1/50th of an inch), but signs of their feeding are very noticeable. Thrips (nymphs and adults) scrape plant tissue to induce the flow of plant juices. This scraping causes the tissue to desiccate and gradually enlarge to form a ‘window’. They also feed on small fruit, pollen, and flower parts. Full-grown nymphs drop to the growing media (some reports indicate 90% – 95% of the Western Flower Thrips drop to the growing media – the remainder pupate on the plants) and go through a pre-pupae and pupae stage before emerging as an adult andclimbing up the plant to feed, mate and repeat their life cycle. Adult thrips are capable of flying.

Thrips are capable of pupating and multiplying most rapidly during periods of warm, dry weather. When growing media and greenhouse floors are kept on the dry side, thrips will multiply rapidly.

Thrips Predator Amblyseius cucumeris – These predatory mites are tan-orange in color and similar in looks and movement to the spider mite predator. The predator population must be built up and established early in the crop, even before evidence of thrips. These predators search the plants and feed on thrip nymphs and immature spidermites. Introduce at the rate of 1 predator per ft², two weeks after transplanting. Repeat applications every month during periods of warm, dry weather. These predators provide a means of control in the foliage. If NO THRIPS are present, A. cucumeris can survive on pollen

These beneficial parasites have worked in our greenhouses to control thrips. They have been found effective to control most insects that spend a portion of their life cycle in the growing media, such as the Onion thrips. “GUARDIAN” provides a means of control within the growing media and earthen floors. Orius Minute Pirate Bug (Orius insidiosus)

Orius can be distinguished by their large red eyes. The adults are about 1/8th inch long (3cm) and brown to black in color. All stages can catch and kill small insects. They hold their prey with the forelegs and suck them empty. Orius are cannibalistic and should be released immediately upon receipt. They fly fairly well and thus are very mobile. Many growers have reported that Orius not only gets rid of their Thrips problem, but also reduces their problems with Whiteflies, spider mites and other pest insects. Orius is a welcome addition to our thrips control.
